About Gunkan ("Battleship") Island
---
Gunkan Island is a commonly used nickname for Hashima, an island off the southern tip of Nagasaki Prefecture that once prospered as a coal-mining city. Starting in the early Meiji Period (1868-1912), the island produced the highest-quality coal for some 100 years, and it was a foundation of support for Japans modernization. People lived a wealthy life, relying on the mainland for all their critical services, and it was a city ahead of its time, boasting first-in-the-nation examples of architecture and construction technology.

In 1974, the coal mine shut down, and in the blink of an eye the island became uninhabited. Since then, as the months and years pass by, the ruins on the island have been reborn as a priceless time capsule preserving memories of bygone glory.
